Psychiatric Services at MTSU Counseling Services

Psychiatric care is available to MTSU students whose needs are a good fit for the services offered through Counseling Services. All students begin with a 45-minute screening appointment with a counselor, who will help determine what services are most appropriate. If psychiatric care through Counseling Services is recommended, your counselor will provide a referral to our on-campus psychiatrist.

Getting Started

Every student begins with a 45-minute screening appointment with a counselor. This helps us understand your concerns and decide what services will be most helpful. If psychiatric care is a good fit, your counselor will provide a referral to our on-campus psychiatrist.

Your First Psychiatry Appointment

Your first visit with the psychiatrist will focus on your symptoms, needs, and goals. The psychiatrist will talk with you about treatment options and work with you to create an initial plan that feels supportive and manageable.

When a Community Provider May Be Best

Sometimes, a student’s needs are best met with a provider outside of Counseling Services. This may happen if you have high-risk concerns, need more intensive care, or would benefit from highly specialized treatment. If that’s the case, our case care manager will personally help you get connected to the right provider and make the transition as smooth as possible.

Our Commitment to You

At every step, we’re here to support you and ensure you feel cared for and connected to the resources you need.

FAQs

No. If you are eligible for services through Counseling Services and psychiatry is recommended, there is no additional cost for the on-campus psychiatric consultation

No. Every student starts with a 45-minute screening with a counselor. This helps us make sure psychiatry—or another service—is the right fit for you.

That’s great! You’re welcome to continue with your provider. If you’d like, our case care manager can help coordinate support between Counseling Services and your outside provider.

If you already have a community provider, we strongly encourage you to continue with them. They know your history and can provide the most consistent care. Counseling Services does not typically coordinate ongoing treatment with outside providers unless there are obstacles that prevent you from continuing with your current provider.

Counseling Services does not provide emergency prescription services. If you’re in urgent need, please go to the nearest emergency room or call 911.
